Apple has released new firmware for three AirPods models simultaneously. Version 8B39 is now rolling out to AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods 4 — up from 8B34 on the AirPods Pro 3, 8B28 on the AirPods Pro 2, and 8B21 on the AirPods 4.
What’s in Firmware 8B39?
Apple has not published release notes for this firmware update, which is standard practice for AirPods firmware. Apple rarely details what changes in AirPods firmware updates, but these updates typically address audio processing improvements, Active Noise Cancellation tuning, connection stability, and bug fixes. Changes in ANC behavior, Transparency mode performance, or spatial audio calibration are common, and users sometimes notice subtle differences after an update even without any official changelog.
How to Check Your AirPods Firmware Version
You cannot manually trigger an AirPods firmware update — Apple pushes them automatically when your AirPods are connected to a power source and within range of a paired iPhone or iPad running the latest iOS. To check your current firmware version:
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
- Tap Bluetooth
- Tap the info button (i) next to your AirPods
- Scroll down to Firmware Version
If you’re running an older firmware version and want to encourage the update, leave your AirPods in their case, connect the case to power, and keep it near your paired iPhone with an active internet connection. The update typically installs overnight.
Which AirPods Are Updated
- AirPods Pro 3 — updated to 8B39 from 8B34
- AirPods Pro 2 — updated to 8B39 from 8B28
- AirPods 4 — updated to 8B39 from 8B21
The AirPods Max 2, AirPods Max (original), and older AirPods models are not part of this update wave.
