Apple Discontinues the Mac Pro — and the $700 Wheel Kit Goes With It

Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro. The product page now redirects to the Mac lineup homepage, and the infamous $700 Wheel Kit is gone with it.

Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro. As of March 27, 2026, the Mac Pro has been quietly removed from Apple’s website — the product page now redirects to Apple’s general Mac lineup. All references to the Mac Pro have been removed from Apple’s online store. Along with it, Apple has also discontinued the famously expensive $700 Mac Pro Wheel Kit, the add-on caster wheels that became a symbol of Apple’s premium-on-premium pricing philosophy.

End of an Era

The Mac Pro had not received a hardware update in over three years, and there had been no credible rumors of a new model in the pipeline. The writing was on the wall. Apple’s transition to Apple Silicon left the Mac Pro in an awkward position — the machine Apple shipped in 2023 used the M2 Ultra chip, but never received the M3 or M4 generation updates that the rest of the Mac lineup enjoyed. With the M5 generation now rolling out across MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Studio, the Intel-era Mac Pro tower form factor simply no longer fit into Apple’s direction.

The Mac Pro launched in its modern tower form in 2019 after years of criticism directed at the “trash can” Mac Pro from 2013, which was notoriously difficult to upgrade and expand. The 2019 model swung hard in the other direction — a massive, modular tower with PCIe expansion slots, MPX module bays, and a price tag that started at $5,999 and could climb well past $50,000 in maxed-out configurations. It was a machine built for video production houses, scientific computing, and professional studios. The Apple Silicon version arrived in 2023, but without the full expansion capabilities that defined its predecessor.

What Replaces It?

For most professionals who were considering a Mac Pro, Apple’s current lineup offers compelling alternatives. The MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max delivers extraordinary performance in a portable form factor, and the Mac Studio — powered by M4 Max or M3 Ultra — handles demanding professional workloads at a fraction of the Mac Pro’s price. For most creative professionals, the gap between a Mac Studio and a Mac Pro was already difficult to justify.

If you’re in the market for a powerful desktop Mac, here are the current options worth considering:

  • Mac Studio (M4 Max) — Apple’s most powerful compact desktop, built for video editors, 3D artists, and audio producers. On sale now.
  • Mac Studio (M3 Ultra) — The Ultra configuration for maximum CPU and GPU performance on the desktop. On sale now.
  • Mac mini (M4 Pro) — Surprisingly capable for its size and price, a serious workhorse for many professional workflows. On sale now.
  • iMac (M4) — The all-in-one option for those who want a clean desk setup with plenty of power. On sale now.

What About the $700 Wheel Kit?

Apple’s Mac Pro Wheel Kit — four caster wheels that let you roll the Mac Pro tower around your studio — became a cultural touchstone for conversations about Apple’s pricing. At $700 for wheels, it was mocked relentlessly, and rightfully so. It is now discontinued alongside the Mac Pro itself. If you own a set, congratulations: you may now own a collector’s item.

Is a New Mac Pro Coming?

There are no current rumors pointing to a next-generation Mac Pro. Apple’s pro desktop strategy appears to have fully shifted to the Mac Studio form factor, which offers exceptional performance without the size, cost, and complexity of a full tower workstation. The Mac Studio with M4 Max or M3 Ultra handles virtually every professional workload that the Mac Pro was sold for, at a significantly lower price and in a much smaller footprint.
