Performance
Apple tested the M5 MacBook Air in February 2026, comparing it against the M1 MacBook Air with 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, as well as M4 configurations. The results show meaningful gains across CPU, GPU, and machine learning workloads — making this the fastest MacBook Air ever.
macOS Tahoe & Apple Intelligence
The MacBook Air M5 ships with macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 and full Apple Intelligence support. Live Translation in Messages, Spotlight improvements, the Phone app on Mac, and the Liquid Glass design are all included out of the box.

Should You Upgrade?
If you’re on an M1 or M2 MacBook Air, the M5 is a compelling upgrade — especially with Wi-Fi 7, double the base storage, and meaningfully faster performance. If you’re on M3 or M4, the jump is more incremental, but the Wi-Fi 7 and storage improvements are still noteworthy. For anyone buying new, this is simply the best MacBook Air Apple has ever made.
