Apple has reversed a policy it held for over a decade. Starting with iOS 26.5, apps can display video through the CarPlay screen while a vehicle is parked. It’s a meaningful shift for a feature that has long frustrated users who wanted more out of their in-car display.
CarPlay launched in 2014 and has always blocked video playback by third-party apps, a restriction Apple maintained even as the screens in cars grew larger and more capable. The thinking was straightforward: video in a moving car is a distraction. But parked is a different story, and Apple has apparently come around to that view.
What Changes With iOS 26.5
With the new APIs shipping in iOS 26.5, developers can build apps that show video content on the CarPlay screen when the car is in park. Think YouTube, streaming apps, or anything else you’d want on a bigger display while you’re sitting in your driveway or waiting to pick someone up. The moment the car is put in drive, the video stops.
Apps will need to be updated to take advantage of the new API, so don’t expect every app to support it on day one. But the door is open, and developers who want in can start building now.
Why It Took This Long
Apple’s caution made sense when CarPlay was new and car screens were small. A seven-inch center display wasn’t exactly a cinematic experience. But newer vehicles ship with screens measuring 12, 15, even 17 inches, and the case for keeping them locked to navigation and music got harder to make.
There’s also been growing pressure from competing platforms. Google’s Android Auto has allowed parked video playback for a while, and some automakers have rolled their own solutions that bypass Apple’s restrictions entirely. Giving developers the tools to do it properly, within Apple’s ecosystem, is the cleaner answer.
When to Expect It
iOS 26.5 is expected to ship publicly around May 12, following the release candidates that went out to developers this week. Once it lands, you’ll need a compatible CarPlay connection and an app that’s been updated to use the new API. The feature works over both wired and wireless CarPlay.
